The advantages of sailing in Greece mean that mooring in the cove of a beautiful Greek village or town often costs nothing! On the occasion that you do have to pay a little something, for a 38ft yacht for example, it’s not usually any more than €20.
The most important factor to consider in terms of climate and conditions of the Cyclades is the meltemi wind. This wind is very similar to France’s northerly mistral, yet due to the lack of mainland surrounding these southerly Greek islands, the meltemi wind can pick up to blow at force 5-7, sometimes even 8. The wind can differ from a north-easterly to a north-westerly direction. Hereby, we recommend this area for experience navigators and sailors in search of a challenge. The meltemi wind starts to blow in June, with its strongest months being the peak months of summer. By September and October it tends to have died down. For better chance of avoiding the sharp winds, we suggest sailing in the mornings when the winds are typically lighter.
Chartering a boat is highly recommendable during May and June or September and October when temperatures are in the mid-twenties and the meltemi weaker. The Cyclades climate is typically mediterranean and can reach up to over 30°C. This is also a a brilliant time to visit as the islands are not as populous in terms of other visitors and tourists.
The Saronic Gulf is more tranquil during the peak season months if you prefer a calmer, easier sail.
Regardless of where you choose for your boat rental in the Cyclades Islands, you can’t go wrong as Mykonos, Paros and Santorini all have something special.
Mykonos is a vibrant cosmopolitan island coupled with the beauty of its gorgeous beaches and own special something: the windmills of Kato Mili. This town springs to life in the summer season, full of bars, nightclubs and sunkissed party goers. The fine Greek architecture here is also truly marvellous.
One of the most talked about islands in the whole of Greece, Santorini is picturesque with it’s blue domed buildings and precious white houses. Enjoy walking the scenic coastal routes of the island, wine tasting and watching the sunset in this unique setting. Santorini has an elaborate volcanic history which once caused parts of the island to sink, breaking the famous island circle.
Paros is famous for its charming coastal villages and stunning coves and bays. Visit the capital Parikia and the delightful town of Naousa, where you can lose yourself in the shops, as well as cafes and restaurants serving delicious Greek food. On the south-eastern coast, Golden Beach is a top beach attraction for all.
Paros, Mykonos and Santorini all have their own airports. European flights vary on the airport and also the time of year. For example, Santorini and Mykonos operate direct flights to various European locations such as Munich, Frankfurt, Rome, Milan, Barcelona, Paris and London. Paros airport generally tends to operate direct flights to Athens and Thessaloniki only.
