Abaco boat rentals

Situated in the heart of the Bahamas, Abacos is a sailor's paradise. Made up of over 700 stunning Caribbean islands and islets, the area is renowned for its beautiful and abundant coral reefs, picturesque coastal towns and unique island culture. With countless action-packed activities and relaxing seaside excursions to indulge in, it's the perfect location for couples, families and group boating getaways.

Departing from the island's marina hub, Marsh Harbour Marina, you can set off on an island hopping adventure for a week or longer with a skipper.

The Abaco Islands lie in the northern Bahamas, 180 miles off the South Florida coast. They comprise the main islands of Great Abaco and Little Abaco, along with smaller barrier cays.

Harbours and attractions in Abaco

The Abacos Islands are sailing paradise! The best way to experience this paradise is to island-hop with a boat rental in Abaco, visiting an island a day and finding new experiences at each. Numerous marinas dot the coast, offering boat access to the Sea of Abaco's shallow, navigable waters.

A great place to begin is at Marsh harbour, the north-eastern tip of Great Abaco, and is a main harbour on these islands. From here sail to Elbow Cay to the east where you will see one of the many island settlements lost in time and painted in the Bahamian hues and also the famous candy striped lighthouse in Hope Town. The next island in site to the north-west is Guana Cay famous for Sunday BBQs atop the islands tall sand dune that overlooks a magnificent 7-mile long beach. The waters between here and Fish Cay produce some of the Bahamas' most exquisite shades of turquoise, ultramarine and azure. Making a stop at Treasure Cay is an absolute must.

The beach here has the whitest and softest sand you'll ever see and boasts one of the top 10 beaches in the world. Stop off at the sandbars of Leeward Beach at Treasure Cay at low tide when the shallow sandbar opens up access to shells, sand £ and sea life. Another great reason to visit Treasure Cay is to test your handicap on the championship golf course. Then, you can make your way to the 3-mile island Green Turtle Cay to visit one of the most charming towns in the Bahamas, New Plymouth.

There is no set itinerary for visiting these islands, most of which are uninhabited. You will fall in love with the warm breezes, panoramic views and calm waters. The phenomenally clear waters are a divers dream. There are many dive schools that offer instruction from the most basic beginner lessons for those who just want to try diving while on holiday, all the way through to advanced specialty courses. Accessible from the beach of Great Guana Cay is one of the largest barrier reefs in the western hemisphere. You are guaranteed to see angelfish, butterfly fish, barracuda, miniature crabs and daredevil shrimp in the day. Try, also, diving at night which offers a totally different experience when navigating through the swim-through caves, seasonally filled wall to wall with silver baitfish.

The Climate in Abaco

Our favourite time of year weather-wise is mid-May through mid-July, October and November, and note that the wind could impact your boating activities in January and February. Cooled by the prevailing south-easterly trade winds in the summer and warmed by the surrounding waters and the Gulfstream in the cooler months, The Abacos Islands are rarely uncomfortably hot or cold. The hottest months are May to October with highs of 89°F with the cooler months being November to April with lows of 64°F. Like Florida, the weather is warm all year round, but you might want to bring a wet suit for snorkelling as the water temperature gets pretty cool in the winter.

Getting to Abaco

The Abacos Islands can be reached by several transport routes. There are 2 airports that serve the Abacos: Marsh Harbour International Airport and Treasure Cay International Airport. You can also fly to Nassau's Lynden Pindling International Airport then travel by fully air conditioned ferry to the Abacos Islands. Another similar option is to fly into Grand Bahama Island's airport and take a Pi  Ferry from McLean's Town. We think the best mode of transport to these stunning Cays is to rent a boat at the closest harbour to the airport so you waste no time beginning your island-hopping adventure.
