Sailboat charter with or without a skipper?

Yes, you can find either bareboat hire in the Bahamas or charters with a skipper.  However, keep in mind that to rent without a skipper, you will need to be in possession of the appropriate boating licence. If you would prefer a more relaxing holiday, however, you should hire a boat with a skipper, who can take you to all the best places in this idyllic island nation.

From July to September, winds grow stronger with the rain and this area is susceptible to hurricanes, making the conditions less favourable for a Bahamas sailing vacation.

Sailing conditions in the Bahamas

Wind Conditions:

Trade Winds: The Bahamas experience consistent trade winds, mainly from the southeast. These prevailing winds provide reliable and manageable sailing conditions, especially during the peak sailing season from November to April.

Current:

Gulf Stream: While not directly in the Bahamas, the nearby Gulf Stream can influence currents. Sailors should be aware of its position and strength, especially when navigating between islands.

Things to Know:

Shallow Waters: The Bahamas are known for their shallow waters, especially in the Exumas. Boaters should be cautious and stay within marked channels to avoid running aground on the numerous sandbars.
